A foot of snow is a long night. A quarter inch of freezing rain is a genuinely harder problem — and it is worth understanding why, because the honest answer includes things no crew, no machine, and no amount of money can do about it. March is a fitting month for this one: late winter is when the metro sits closest to the freezing line, and that is exactly where these storms live.

What freezing rain and sleet actually are

Both start the same way: snow falls into a layer of warm air aloft and melts into plain rain. What happens next depends on the cold air hugging the ground.

Sleet forms when that cold layer is deep enough for the raindrops to refreeze on the way down. It lands as ice pellets — dense, granular, bouncy. Freezing rain forms when the cold layer is shallow: the drops stay liquid all the way down, then freeze on contact with pavement, cars, and tree limbs that are below freezing. The result is glaze ice — a continuous sheet chemically bonded to whatever it landed on.

That distinction — pellets versus bonded sheet — is the entire story of what can be done afterward.

Sleet, honestly, is not the hard part

Here is a place where the scary-sounding thing mostly doesn't matter: sleet by itself moves fine. It is heavy — the machine works harder than it would in fluff — but it is loose, granular material, and loose material is what snowblowers exist to move. A couple inches of sleet gets cleared like a couple inches of dense snow. If sleet is all a storm brings, the driveway ends up clear.

Glaze is the hard part

Freezing rain is different in kind, not degree. A snowblower — any snow equipment — removes loose material sitting on a surface. Glaze is not sitting on your driveway; it is bonded to it, molecule to slab. There is no blade setting or auger that lifts a bonded film without attacking the concrete underneath it. Scraping hard enough to break the bond means gouging the slab, and nobody who cares about your driveway will do that.

The truly nasty versions are the layered storms. Freezing rain first, snow after: the snow gets cleared and reveals a lubricated ice sheet underneath that was there all along. Snow or sleet first, freezing rain after: the rain welds the top of the pile into a crust and glues the bottom to the pavement. Crews can and do time clearing around the changeover when the forecast shows one — getting the loose stuff off before the rain arrives means the glaze bonds to bare (and often slightly warmer) pavement in a thinner layer, instead of soaking into a snowpack and freezing it solid.

What can actually be done

What a crew can do: clear every bit of loose material promptly, so there is as little as possible for rain to bond with and traffic to pack down. That is genuinely the best mechanical defense, and it is the whole reason prompt, full-width clearing beats any amount of after-the-fact heroics.

What a crew cannot do: remove bonded glaze. And to be direct about scope — Iceworks is a driveway-only, salt-free service. We do not apply salt or de-icers, for reasons covered at length elsewhere on this site: salting a residential slab trades today's ice for scaled concrete, burned grass, and corroded metal. An ice event also may not involve service at all — the 1-inch trigger is about accumulation, and a pure freezing-rain storm can glaze the county while depositing nothing measurable. Nobody is coming to fix glaze, from any company, with any equipment. That is not a service gap; it is physics.

What you can do about the glaze that forms

For the patch of glaze that shows up anyway: traction, not melting, is the realistic goal. Plain sand or non-clumping grit makes ice walkable immediately and harms nothing. A concrete-safe de-icer like calcium magnesium acetate, used sparingly, can break the bond on a stubborn spot. And the March sun does real work — a south-facing Blaine driveway cleared down to dark pavement will often shed its glaze by afternoon while a snow-covered one stays ice all week. Which is one more argument for keeping the slab bare.

The bottom line

Sleet is just heavy snow as far as clearing is concerned; freezing rain is a bonded sheet no machine can lift, and anyone promising otherwise is selling something.
