Every winter the same two problems get described in the same phone calls, usually in the same sentence: ice building up on the roof edge, and ice building up on the driveway. They look related — it is all ice, it is all winter — but they are different problems with different causes, and the fix for one does nothing for the other.
What an ice dam actually is
An ice dam is a roof problem, and more precisely a heat problem. Heat escaping from the house into the attic warms the upper roof deck. Snow on that warm section melts, the water runs down the roof, and it refreezes when it reaches the eaves — the overhang, which sits over outside air and stays cold. The refrozen ridge is the dam. As it grows, meltwater pools behind it, and pooled water on a roof does what pooled water always does: finds its way backward, under the shingles, and into the house.
Two things follow from that mechanism:
- Gutters are not the cause. The dam forms at the cold eave whether the gutter is spotless or packed with leaves. Clean gutters help water leave once it gets past the dam; they do not prevent the dam.
- The permanent fix is in the attic, not on the roof. Air sealing and insulation stop the heat loss that drives the melt. Roof raking after a big snow and professional steaming for an active leak are management, not cures.
If the same section of eave grows a dam every winter, that section of attic is telling you where the heat is escaping.
What driveway ice actually is
Driveway ice is a ground-level water problem. No attic involved. It comes from a short list of sources:
- Downspouts discharging onto the pavement. Every thaw sends roof water across the slab; every night refreezes it in the same spot.
- Snowbanks melting in afternoon sun. South-facing banks bleed meltwater across the driveway all afternoon, and the sheet freezes at dusk. Same patch, every day, until the bank is gone.
- Compacted snow. Snow that gets driven over before it is cleared turns to hardpack, and hardpack polished by tires is functionally ice.
- Low spots. Anywhere water stands in October is somewhere ice stands in January.
The fixes are equally ground-level: get the water routed off the pavement, clear snow before traffic compacts it, and use sand for traction where ice forms anyway. Salting has real limits here — rock salt loses effectiveness as temperatures drop into the teens, which is much of a north-metro January.
Where people get them confused
The confusion cases are the ones where roof ice shows up at ground level. A roof valley that dumps its meltwater right above the garage door will build a sheet of ice on the driveway below — that looks like a driveway problem, but the driveway is just where the roof's water landed. Same with the strip of glare ice on a front walk that runs under an eave: that is the roof dripping, not the sidewalk failing. Before treating the ice, look up. If the source is above you, treating the pavement is mopping with the tap running.

A snow removal service — ours included — works at ground level. Prompt clearing prevents the compaction kind of driveway ice, and that is a real and worthwhile thing. But nobody clearing your driveway is doing anything about an ice dam, and no roofer is fixing your hardpack. The two problems share a season and nothing else — and naming yours correctly is most of the way to fixing it.
