Most driveways in the north metro can be quoted from a size chart in about a minute: count the cars across the widest point, check the length, done. A few layouts cannot — not because they are unpriceable, but because the question they raise is not how big, it is how does the machine work this space. Those get a conversation first.

Three layouts account for nearly all of them.

Steep driveways

First, the reassurance: a normal Minnesota pitch is not steep. Nearly every driveway sheds water toward the street, and that gentle grade changes nothing — do not talk yourself into a conversation over it.

A genuinely steep driveway is the kind you already know you have, because you have felt a car hesitate on it in winter. The machine question is traction: an inverted snowblower rides behind the tractor, and the tractor has to hold its line on a snow-covered grade, uphill and down, storm after storm. Whether it can depends on the grade itself, the surface, and where the slope crests — a driveway that plunges from the garage down to the street behaves differently than one that climbs from the street and levels off.

That is why steep is a conversation instead of a checkbox. Grade is nearly invisible in satellite imagery, so a quote that never asks about it is a quote that has not actually seen your driveway. Usually the conversation is short, and it ends the ordinary way — a seasonal price and a spot on the route.

Curved driveways

A sweeping curve is a non-issue; the tractor follows it the way your car does. The layouts that need a look are the tight ones — switchbacks, hard S-curves, a sharp bend between retaining walls or mature trees.

The reason is geometry. The blower is a trailed implement: it swings behind the tractor on turns, and it does not pivot in place. A curve is workable or not based on two things together — the radius of the bend and the width of the pavement through it. A tight bend on a wide driveway leaves room to swing; the same bend on a single-lane ribbon between boulders may not. Neither the radius nor the width alone settles it, which is why this is a conversation and not a rule you can look up.

What does not matter: how many curves. One tight pinch point is the whole question; four graceful bends are none of it.

Shared driveways

Around the lakes in Lino Lakes and on flag lots across Anoka County, one driveway sometimes serves two homes — a long common ribbon that forks near the houses. The machine handles these fine. The conversation is about everything else:

  • Who is the customer? One household signing for the whole run, both signing separately, or one signing for only their fork — all three happen, and the quote depends on which.
  • Where does the shared part end? Property lines rarely announce themselves in pavement.
  • Who sees the updates? Storm updates flow through the customer portal, so it matters whose portal it is.

There is one genuine advantage worth knowing: an inverted snowblower disperses snow across the yard as it goes rather than pushing it into banks the way a plow truck does. On a shared driveway, that removes the classic neighbor dispute — nobody's snow ends up piled on the other household's side.

What the conversation is not

It is not a soft opening for a bigger number. Layout and size are different questions: a steep 2-car driveway is still a 2-car driveway, and if the machine can serve it, it is quoted and served like any other, one flat price for the season, 1-inch trigger, November through mid-April. The conversation exists to make sure the answer given is one the tractor can keep every storm — a quote that ignores your switchback is not a better deal, it is a problem scheduled for the first blizzard.
