Every spring, driveways in the north metro come out from under the snow looking a little worse than they went in, and winter gets the blame as a whole. But winter is not one thing. A driveway is damaged by three specific mechanisms — and several things that look harmful do essentially nothing. Knowing which is which changes what you do about it.
Blade contact
Blade damage is the mechanical one: a steel edge riding on the pavement, pass after pass, all winter. On asphalt it scrapes off sealcoat and can gouge the surface where the blade catches a soft spot; on concrete it finds every heaved slab edge and joint, because a raised lip and a fast-moving blade only meet one way. Plow trucks are the usual offenders — not because operators are careless, but because a truck moving at speed with a heavy blade has less margin than slower equipment, and every driveway has a lip somewhere.
This is a solvable problem, and how it is solved is worth asking any service about. Skid shoes keep an edge riding just above the surface; poly edges are gentler than steel; and a tractor with an inverted snowblower avoids the scraping geometry altogether, which is part of why we run them. If your driveway has fresh parallel gouges in April, the equipment was the cause — not the winter.
Salt — but really, salt on concrete
Salt damage is chemical and surprisingly selective. Asphalt is largely indifferent to salt: the binder does not react with chloride, which is why road crews can pour salt on blacktop for decades. Concrete is the casualty. Salt-laden meltwater soaks into the surface, and the resulting freeze cycles pop the finished top layer off in flakes and pits — the scaling you see on so many metro driveways and garage aprons. Concrete less than a year old is the most vulnerable, which is why concrete contractors tell you to keep salt entirely off a new driveway through its first winter.
The subtle version is the salt you did not apply: the slush your car carries home from salted roads, dripping onto the same two strips of the garage apron all winter. If your concrete is scaling in the tire paths and nowhere else, that is road salt arriving by car. Sand gives traction without the chemistry, and clearing snow promptly reduces the need for either.
Freeze-thaw
Freeze-thaw is the patient one. Water expands roughly nine percent when it freezes, and it does so with enough force to break stone — so every crack that holds water becomes a wedge that winter drives a little deeper on every cycle. The metro's winters are rich in those cycles: a February thaw, a March freeze, over and over. Hairline cracks widen, edges spall, and water that has worked under a slab or an asphalt surface heaves it from below.
The important part: freeze-thaw does not create the weakness, it exploits it. Sound, sealed pavement sheds water and shrugs off the cycles. Pavement with open cracks recruits winter as a demolition crew. This is why crack sealing is a fall job — the cheapest winter protection a driveway gets is done in October, before the first snow, with a caulk gun.
What doesn't damage a driveway
Just as useful is the list of non-problems:
- Snow sitting on the pavement. A snow blanket is inert — if anything it moderates temperature swings underneath. Snow's damage comes only when it melts and refreezes as water in cracks, which is a drainage story, not a snow story.
- The weight of snowbanks. A pavement designed to carry vehicles does not care about piled snow along its edge.
- Cold itself. Dry cold does nothing to sound pavement. A minus-20 week with no moisture is the safest weather a driveway sees all winter.
- A properly set-up snowblower. Augers and skid shoes do not touch the pavement the way a dropped steel blade does. Clearing snow does not wear out a driveway; specific equipment choices do.
The spring inspection
In April, walk the driveway and read the evidence. Parallel gouges: blade contact. Flaking and pitting on concrete, worst in the tire paths: salt. Cracks that are wider than they were in October, or a slab corner sitting higher: freeze-thaw at work on water that had a way in. Each mechanism leaves its own signature, each has its own fix — and none of them is just "winter."
