The first measurable snow in the north metro is almost never the biggest storm of the winter. It is reliably the messiest. That is not a coincidence, and it is not really about the snow — it is about everything the snow lands on.
The ground is still warm
An early-season snowfall lands on pavement that spent September above freezing. The bottom layer melts on contact, the air temperature drops after the sun goes down, and what refreezes overnight is a glaze bonded directly to the slab — under whatever snow is still falling. Drive over it a few times before it gets cleared and you have manufactured hardpack that no shovel is going to remove.
Mid-winter snow does not behave this way. In January the pavement is cold, the snow stays snow, and it sweeps off clean. The first snowfall is the one that turns to ice underneath you, and it does it precisely because the season just started.
Early-season snow is heavy
Snow that falls at 30 degrees carries far more water than snow that falls at 10. The fluffy stuff you can push with a plastic shovel is a January phenomenon; October and November snow tends to be dense, wet, and heavy — the kind that stalls snowblowers and, more seriously, the kind that puts people shoveling it under real cardiac strain. The heaviest shoveling of the winter often happens in the first storm, done by people who have not shoveled anything since March.
Nothing has been tested yet
The snowblower has been sitting in the garage since spring, with spring's fuel still in it. The first storm is when the whole metro discovers dead batteries, gummed carburetors, and pull cords that finally let go — simultaneously. Small-engine shops in the north metro fill up the day after the first snowfall, which is the one week their turnaround time matters most.
The same is true of everything else that sat idle: the shovels that were not replaced, the ice melt that clumped solid in its bucket, the driveway that never got staked because there was always another weekend.
Everyone is relearning at once
Drivers spend the first storm remembering how to drive on snow, which makes the commute longer, which compresses the window everyone has to deal with their own driveway. City crews are running their routes in earnest for the first time. Snow services are shaking out new routes and new hires. None of this is anyone failing — it is a system coming out of six months of hibernation, all at once, under load.
By the third storm, all of it works. Drivers have adjusted, routes are dialed, equipment is either fixed or replaced. The first storm is the shakedown cruise, and shakedown cruises are bumpy.
The melt that teaches the wrong lesson
There is one more trap specific to the season's opener: it often disappears on its own. An October or early-November snowfall lands on warm ground under a still-respectable sun, and within a few days it is gone. The tempting conclusion is that clearing it was optional. The problem is the part that did not evaporate — the tire-packed strips where cars drove through it, which refroze as hardpack and outlasted the rest of the snow by a week. The first snowfall melts; what you drove on stays. That is the argument for clearing even the storm you know is temporary.
What this means practically
The fix for the first storm happens in October, not during it:
- Run the snowblower before you need it. Fresh fuel, a spare shear pin, confirm it starts. Ten minutes.
- Set your driveway markers while the ground still takes a stake.
- Settle the plan. If you are hiring a service, do it before the season — routes in the north metro fill in the fall, and calling mid-storm puts you behind everyone who planned ahead. Iceworks crews run through the night when a storm comes through, but route spots are set well before that.
- Respect the wet stuff. If the first snowfall is the heavy kind, treat it as the workout it is, or let a machine do it.
The first storm punishes improvisation and rewards almost any amount of preparation. It is the cheapest lesson of the winter — if you learn it in October.
